Ten years ago, North Charleston’s claim to fame was its large variety of shopping centers, “big box” retailers and as the home of Charleston International Airport. These days, thanks in part to the recent influx of well respected developers, North Charleston is among the hottest and most talked about residential real estate markets in the area. North Charleston area is, more or less, defined as the northwestern progression of the Charleston peninsula bordered by the Cooper River to the East, the Ashley River to the West stretching north to Summerville.
Two of the developments that have folks buzzing are Noisette and Mixson Avenue. Noisette is redeveloping the Navy Yard which was closed in the late 1980’s, a victim of Federal budget cuts. Mixson Avenue project is being developed by the I’on Group, well known for their New Urbanist community, I’on Village, in Mt. Pleasant. Both are located near to Main Street, North Charleston’s old-fashioned downtown area that has been revitalized by the opening of new businesses and the continued operation of mainstays, including everyone’s favorite lunch spot, Aunt Bea’s.
